๐ January Wellness Update
Warm GingerโCoconut Gut-Soothing Broth
As we settle into the new year, many of us feel the pull to simplify our routines and support our gut and central nervous system. This month, Iโm sharing two simple tools you can begin using right awayโone food-based and one essential-oil basedโplus a look at Young Livingโs newest metabolic support system.
๐ฅฃ RECIPE OF THE MONTH
Warm GingerโCoconut Gut-Soothing Broth
Ingredients:
1 cup chicken bone broth
1โ2 tsp grated fresh ginger
ยผ cup coconut milk
Pinch of sea salt
Optional: squeeze of lime or coconut aminos
Instructions:
Warm broth gently on the stovetop.
Add ginger and simmer 3โ5 minutes.
Stir in coconut milk + sea salt.
Sip slowly for warmth and gut comfort.
๐ฅฃ BONUS RECIPE
Low-Histamine Chicken Stock (Stovetop Method)
A gentle, clean broth for sensitive digestion, low histamine needs, and calming the central nervous system.
Why low histamine?
Histamine rises in slow-cooked, long-simmered broths. This shorter method keeps nutrients while staying gentle for kids and adults who react to high-histamine foods.
Ingredients:
2 lbs. chicken wings or drumsticks
1 carrot, peeled and chopped
1 zucchini, chopped (optional, low histamine)
1โ2 celery stalks
1 bay leaf
1 tsp sea salt
8โ10 cups of water
Instructions:
Place chicken and vegetables in a large pot.
Add water and bring to a boil quickly (10โ12 minutes).
Reduce the heat and simmer for no more than 45 minutes to an hour.
Skim any foam from the top.
Strain immediately and cool rapidly.
Store up to 24 hours or freeze immediately.
๐ง What Are Histamines?
And Why Do They Affect the Gut, Brain & Behavior?
Most people think histamines relate only to allergies, but histamine is also a chemical messenger involved in digestion, the immune response, and the central nervous system.
Problems begin when histamine becomes too high, or the body canโt clear it well.
Histamine & the Gut
High histamine may contribute to:
bloating
reflux
loose stools
nausea
stomach discomfort
food reactions without allergies
Histamine & the Brain
Histamine acts as a neurotransmitter, influencing:
wakefulness
attention
mood stability
sensory processing
Too much histamine can lead to:
irritability
headaches
restlessness
โwired but tired.โ
brain fog
Histamine & Behavior (especially in neurodivergence)
Excess histamine can show up as:
emotional outbursts
quick mood swings
sensory overload
difficulty settling
hyperactivity
Histamine imbalance often shows in behaviors long before someone realizes itโs food-related.
Why Some People Are More Sensitive
The body uses the enzyme DAO to break down histamine.
Low DAO + gut imbalance + stress = faster histamine buildup.
High histamine can also happen when:
The food cooks for too long
Leftovers sit too long
Gut bacteria are off
The immune system is overwhelmed
The stress load is high
A low-histamine broth is a gentle starting point for many families.
